Short version: Shopify has no self-serve order editing. A customer who typed the wrong apartment number or picked the wrong size has to email you, and you fix it by hand, if you catch it before the parcel leaves. Smart Checkout Widgets puts an Order editing block on the Thank you and Order status pages, so customers fix those mistakes themselves within a time window you set. It works on every Shopify plan and is part of the Pro plan.
What Shopify does and does not do
Staff with the Edit orders permission can change unfulfilled orders in the admin. Customer accounts let shoppers view orders, reorder and request returns. Nothing lets the customer change the order itself. So every "can I change my address?" or "I meant a medium" becomes a support ticket, and a missed one becomes a reshipment.
What customers can change
- Shipping address, within the same country, so shipping rates, taxes and duties stay correct.
- Size, color or other option: a swap to an in-stock variant of the same product at the same price.
- Quantity: lower it or remove an item. Shopify calculates the refund, including tax and discounts, and sends it to the original payment method.
- Cancel the order, with a full refund and the stock put back.
Every one of these needs no new payment from the customer. Adding items and upgrading to a pricier variant need the customer to pay the difference, and they are on the roadmap rather than half-done.
How it stays safe
Orders are money, so the rules lean towards saying no:
- An edit window you choose: 15 minutes to 24 hours from when the order is placed. After that, the block disappears.
- An optional fulfillment hold: new orders wait until the window ends, so nothing ships in its original form. The hold is released automatically, and you can release it yourself from the order page at any time.
- Only the buyer can edit. Each request has to prove it comes from the browser that placed the order.
- Shopify's current view of the order is checked on every change. Once fulfillment starts, the order is cancelled, or something else changes, editing stops.
- Gift cards, subscriptions and free gifts are never editable, and a swap is only committed if Shopify's recalculated total matches the original.
- Everything is visible. Edited orders are tagged Customer edited, and the app lists every change, refusal and hold.
Set it up in three steps
- In Smart Checkout Widgets, open Order editing, switch it on, pick the edit window and choose which changes to allow.
- Click Allow access if you want variant swaps and fulfillment holds. The extra permissions are only asked for on that page.
- Add the Order editing block to the Thank you page and the Order status page in Shopify's checkout editor. The app has a button for each.
How this compares with dedicated order-editing apps
Dedicated apps charge for this on its own, typically from around $99 a month upwards, with tiers that rise with order volume. They also go further: integrations with warehouses and fulfillment services, edits that collect extra payment, and upsells inside the edit flow. If you need those, they are worth the money. If what you need is fewer "please change my order" emails, order editing is included in Smart Checkout Widgets Pro at $99 a month with unlimited orders, alongside every widget, gift and checkout rule.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify customers edit their own orders?
Not natively. Staff can edit unfulfilled orders in the Shopify admin, and customer accounts let shoppers view orders and request returns, but there is no built-in way for a customer to change an order after checkout. That needs an app.
Does self-serve order editing need Shopify Plus?
No. It runs on the Thank you and Order status pages, which apps can extend on every Shopify plan except Starter.
How are refunds handled when a customer removes an item?
Smart Checkout Widgets asks Shopify to calculate the refund, the same way the Refund button in the admin does, including tax and discounts, and refunds it to the original payment method.
Can an order ship before the customer finishes editing?
Not if you turn on the fulfillment hold. New orders are held until the edit window ends and released automatically. You can release a hold yourself from the order page at any time.
Can customers add items or upgrade to a more expensive variant?
Not yet. Every change available today needs no new payment: address changes, same-price swaps, lower quantities and cancellations. Changes that need the customer to pay more are on the roadmap.
