By the time a Black Friday shopper reaches checkout, they've already decided to buy. What loses the sale now is doubt, like whether the parcel will arrive before the holidays or why their usual payment method is at the bottom of the list. Show one relevant upsell, answer the question most likely to stop the purchase, and put payment methods in a useful order.
Use one upsell with an obvious reason
An upsell belongs in checkout when the shopper can see in a few seconds why it fits. Replenishment, protection, a matching accessory or a simple add-on all work. Broad "you might also like" recommendations make people compare products at the moment they're trying to pay.
Keep the card compact, show the full price, and make it easy to ignore. The Shopify checkout upsell guide covers placement and offer selection in more detail. If your main Black Friday offer is a gift, make sure the upsell supports the same basket and doesn't compete with it.
Answer the question that's actually blocking the sale
A "Secure checkout" badge tells shoppers very little. Over Black Friday the question on their mind is usually a holiday delivery cutoff, a return window or a warranty condition. Put the short answer next to the step where they'll wonder about it, and link to the full policy.
Smart Checkout Widgets can add trust badges, banners, accordions, custom fields and payment icons to Shopify Plus checkout. Pick the one or two that answer real questions. See the trust and payment guide for placement examples.
Put payment and shipping methods in a sensible order
Payment choice should reflect the market, the order value and what you can actually fulfil. Shopify's payment customization functions can hide, reorder or rename methods, and the official documentation is the source of truth for what's allowed. Smart Checkout Widgets builds these as payment method rules, and because they run as Shopify Functions they work on every Shopify plan, not only Plus.
- Move the methods most of your buyers use higher up for each market.
- Rename a method only when the new label is clearer, for example to mention a handling fee.
- Hide a method only when the business rule is written down and tested. Hiding cash on delivery above a cart value is a common Black Friday case.
- Check how accelerated checkout changes the path.
Shipping method rules work the same way. A date condition can hide or rename a rate on specific days, so a delivery service that would miss your holiday cutoff isn't offered on those days. The shipping method rules guide has the setup.
Design for the smallest realistic screen
Test checkout at 320px wide, with browser zoom, long product names, translated labels, validation errors and the on-screen keyboard open. The pay button and the order total should still be easy to find once every extension has rendered.
Measure each layer separately
Name campaigns consistently and record which change you made: the gift, the upsell or the reassurance. Watch checkout completion, upsell take rate, gift cost, refunds, support contacts and payment errors together. A higher add-on rate isn't worth much if fewer people finish checkout or the margin drops.

Frequently asked questions
How many upsells should appear in checkout during Black Friday?
Start with one that clearly fits the basket. Add a second only if it meets a different need and still reads easily on a phone.
What trust message belongs in Black Friday checkout?
Answer the question most likely to stop the purchase, usually delivery timing, returns or warranty, and link to the full policy.
Do payment method rules need Shopify Plus?
No. Smart Checkout Widgets hides, renames and reorders payment and shipping methods with Shopify Functions, which run on every Shopify plan. The checkout widgets themselves, such as upsells and trust badges, need Shopify Plus.
